Effie Trinket nails

I know I'm a little late but I saw the Hunger Games in the theaters recently.  I really liked Effie Trinket, her crazy style and her nails!

For the base, I used China Glaze Heli-Yum and sponged Wet n Wild A Show at the Palladium which is a gold foil for the tips.  I also added Electrify on tips and the top coat is Essie As Gold as it Gets.  If you click to enlarge, you can see the little gold flakes in the Essie.

I liked the Hunger Games. I'm sad it took me so long to see the movie.

Boyfriend Nails

Like I said yesterday, my boyfriend got really sick.  He's been working real hard and going to classes at night.  He's overworked and has a really bad cough and cold.  He fell asleep; I painted his nails.

Boyfriend Lizard is a really terrible nail biter. I gave him full manicure. I used cuticle remover and pushed his cuticles back and filed his nails.  The color is Blackheart My Violet Tendencies and the accent nail is China Glaze Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.  I used some stick on stars and a skull nail sticker.

I took it off for him and scrubbed his nails to get the shimmer off. All done!

Artsy Wednesday: Ombre Manicure

I've got nothing. My boyfriend got really sick this week and got me sick.  I did a white to grey to black ombre manicure a long time ago but the photo wasn't too good.

Sometimes hacks are necessary

I love trying to grow my nails as long as possible.  I got to about .6-7.mm of free edge (hard to measure).  I wore them that length for quite some time.  Yesterday, I had to wrangle my cat into his carrier and one my nails tore at the nail bed.  Long nails are nice but I hate having to change and reapply patches. I took about .3mm off yesterday.

Left photo pre-hack and right photo post-hack.

Patch update: I soaked off all my patches.  I grew out the breaks I had.  Now, I have a tear on my the pinkie on my right hand.  I patched it up with a fiberglass wrap and ASP lightless gel.  It'll take a month or more to grow then I'll have to cut them down again.

NOTD: China Glaze Fast Track

China Glaze Fast Track is an untried from the Hunger Games collection.  I bought it and it didn't tickle my fancy. On the nail, it still didn't tickle my fancy.  I paid full price and these are going on sale now for $1.

China Glaze Fast Track.  This was 3-coats with top coat.  It's taupe nude with gold shimmer.  It really didn't work with my skin tone but was a good color to wear to work.  It almost gives me mannequin hands.  It was a very hard color to capture on camera.

365 Days of Color: Bora Bora & Kiss Me, I'm Irish

The upcoming Travel the World collection by 365 Days of Color is inspired by places she'd love to visit or her favorite places in the world.  The collection has 8 different polishes total and will release sometime next week.

I swatched Bora Bora and Kiss Me, I'm Irish.

With Flash

Bottle shot.

365 Days of Color Bora Bora. Bora Bora is a light blue creme with a hint of pink shimmer.  She really captured the crisp clean serenity of tropical ocean water.  I thought this would be close to Sinful Colors Cinderella, it's not. This is more of a blue with no pink micro glitter.

Here's someplace tropical I went last year!

Bottle Shot

365 Days of Color Kiss Me, I'm Irish is a green/gold hex glitter mix in a clear base.  This was 2-coats, seen here over Sinful Colors Happy Ending.  This green mix would be great for a St. Patrick's Day mani or for any green polish aficionados out there, this mix is for you.  Very sparkily in real life.

I loved the inspiration behind the Travel the World collection.  I really want a vacation now.  Someplace far and warm!

Do you have your passport updated?
Where would you like to go?

Please check 365 Days of Color blog or Facebook when the Big Cartel opens to purchase these polishes.

Artsy Wednesday: Inspired by Nature

For this week's post, I decided to try my new nail art tattoos by Big Ruby. They work like any other temporary stick on tattoo but they're small enough to fit on your nail.

Since this week's theme is inspired by nature, I choose sea creatures!

I used Sinful Colors Irish Green plus Pretty and Polished Bayou Blitz to create a swampy and polluted sea background.  Too bad they don't have swamp creatures nail stickers. I loved and hated this look at the same time.  Too bright and green.  Also, please check out Big Ruby nail tattoos.  Big Ruby is an awesome indie company and proceeds are to donated animal welfare charities.

Untried Tuesday: Sinful Colors

There's a post floating around the Facebook nail pages about trying to get people on board for the "Untried Tuesday/Try it Out Tuesday."  To be honest, I don't really wear Sinful Colors as full manicures.  I use them more for nail art.

Here's some Sinful Colors I bought just cause I was bored and felt like spending $2.

Sinful Colors Irish Green.  A lime green neon. It took 4-coats until fully opaque.  A little slow drying.  The VNL only showed under the lights.  Again these are $2, they're not going to be perfect.

Sinful Colors Happy Ending. I bought it because the name made me giggle and the gold shimmer.

If you are looking to add some greens to your color wardrobe, definitely pick these up.  These can be found at any department or drugstore.  I have many many more untrieds unfortunately but will keep my blog going and going!

4th of July Nail Art Contest: winners

I must say I am quite amazed by the turnout of my very first nail art contest! There were 40 entries and this weekend I chose the two winners.  It was a difficult task.  All the entries were equally awesome.

Here were the two lucky winners:

Michelle, a fan.

Everyone had such great variations of their take on the Independence Day Holiday.  Many painted flags, sparkling fireworks, stars and some did cookout food and BBQs.  All 40 entries can be found here.  Thanks again to all that participated.  I cannot thank you enough.  You were all great!

I hope to have more fun nail art contests in the future with fun prizes.

Patriotic Glitter Frankens swatches

I thought I'd show the how the patriotic glitters look as a full manicure. I made little labels for my bottles and I am quite proud of them.  Let's take a look!

Patriotica is a festive mix of red, white, blue and silver glitter of all different shapes and sizes.  My friend helped me name it.  This is dedicated to you Rex.  This was three coats to get an even coating of glitter.  The base color is Wet n Wild Silvivor.

Stars and Stripes Forever is a mix of red, white and blue bar glitter with blue stars.  I added a slight silver shimmer. The bar glitter did curl up near the edges.  It needed another coat of top coat.  Also, my top coat has become thick and goopy.

I also bought some patriotic Hello Kitty rings as an early birthday present to myself.

Super cute!

As with all chunky glitters, these need a good shake.  Once enough glitter was on the brush, I globed it on my nail pushing the glitter around to get an even coating.  I tried to put enough stars in Stars & Stripes so you don't have to dig for them.  I hope the lucky winners of my contest enjoy them as much as I do.

Artsy Wednesday: 3D Nail Art

Sorry the week caught up to me again!  I've got nothing new. I was busy working on frankens all weekend.    Life will be hectic for me for the next month or so.  I need to find a new place to live and move!  I will try to keep up with Artsy Wednesday.

The theme this week is stick-on things.  3D Nail art is one of my favorites:

These are 3D holo stars from Sallys.

If you haven't entered my 4th of July manicure contest, rules are posted here.  Please I'd like everyone to try to enter!  Please share on your respective pages.

Ms. Lizard's Patriotic Nail Art Contest

My birthday is coming up! It's the 5th of July. Yay! I've always liked Independence Day growing up. It felt like having two birthdays!  So I decided to host a patriotic nail art contest.

The prizes are two patriotic glitter frankens made by me and a Seche Vite mini top coat.

The official rules can be found under my Events tab on my Facebook fan page.  Basically, submit a photo of your 4th of July nail art.  It doesn't have to red, white or blue.  It can be whatever reminds you of the holiday.

Deadline is June 15th, 2012 by 11:59 pm.  I'm having a small timeframe because I want to get these mailed with enough time so winners can wear them by the 4th of July.

Please share on your fan pages and please enter if you can!

Holographics cont. OPI DS Extravagance and Coronation

Annoyed and I couldn't figure out what to wear I grabbed OPI DS Extravagance out of my helmer.  This is from their 2008 Designer Series release.

OPI DS Extravagance. A rich plum purple with slight holographic effect. See that glowy holo on my pinkie? This is how the polish glows under the sun. My camera couldn't pick it up.

Holographic swatches: Layla Mercury Twilight and A England's Princess Tears

I'm sorry.  I feel I'm always behind with my swatches.  Here's a couple of holographic polishes I picked up while I was away studying.

Layla Mercury Twilight.  No baseboat, no topcoat.  4-coats.  This is probably the most holographic silver I own.  Pictures were all taken in full sunlight.  I did get some patchy application.  The directions say to not wear a basecoat or use an aqua basecoat designed for holographic polishes.  For more swatches of other silver holos I own, please click here.

Please excuse my writer's callus.

A England's Princess Tears. It's a pale lilac holographic.  2-coats, no top coat.  Other bloggers say it's a holographic duochrome but I could not see the duochrome effect.  This picture here is taken with flash under artificial lighting.

Taken in full sun.

Under artificial lighting.

Princess Tears applied well but the formula was slow drying.  I dinged my nail when I thought it was dry.  The holographic effect was barely visible in low light.  Though pretty, I was not impressed.

I think I'm done buying holographic polishes for awhile now!
